4 dead after helicopter crashes on South Shore of Montreal

Four people are dead after a helicopter crashed on the South Shore of Montreal Saturday afternoon.

Provincial police, Sûreté du Québec (SQ), told CTV News they were called to the scene around 2:30 p.m. after a helicopter crashed and caught fire near Rang des Écossais off Highway 10 in the Sainte-Brigide-d’Iberville municipality.

Sûreté du Québec Sergeant Audrey-Anne Bilodeau said four people inside the helicopter were declared dead at the scene. First responders brought the fire under control within the following hour.

Based on preliminary information, the SQ said the helicopter was in distress shortly after it took off and then crashed.

Police could not confirm ownership of the helicopter, where it took off, where it was headed, or the identities of the victims.

The SQ said an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances that led to the incident.

In a statement to CTV News, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) said it has deployed a team of investigators to the scene.
