In only a few weeks, Abbotsford’s Ethan Ikeda will be heading to Scotland to continue his family’s legacy of representing Canada on some of the biggest stages in the world of gymnastics.
As a member of Team Canada for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, Ikeda and nine other Canadian gymnasts will test their skills across 14 different events.
The teen athlete comes from a long line of accomplished gymnasts, but this will be his first time competing at a Commonwealth Games, making him one of just three first-timers on the Canadian men’s squad this year.
Ikeda won’t be wading into these uncertain waters alone, with his father Richard Ikeda also joining Team Canada as a coach for the upcoming tournament.
As a younger athlete, Richard competed in three Commonwealth Games for Canada and brought home medals from every single one.
Now, Ethan will have the opportunity to further the Ikeda legacy, with his father front row to witness it all.
The two Ikeda men are the only B.C. members of Canada’s gymnastics teams this year, with Team Canada director Kelly Laframboise saying that the mixture of athlete backgrounds and experience makes for an exciting blend.
“Whether making their Commonwealth Games debut or returning to compete again, these athletes have earned the opportunity to wear the Maple Leaf,” said Laframboise.
“We know they’ll represent Canada with pride and showcase the strength of our gymnastics program.”
The 2026 Commonwealth Games take place in Glasgow from July 23 to Aug. 2 and include competitions in 16 different sports.
