Ads arrive on ChatGPT in France

Users turn to ChatGPT to "plan a trip, choose software for their business, furnish their home, or learn how to start a new hobby"... and as of Monday, August 24, in France, they will begin seeing advertisements alongside the assistant's responses, OpenAI announced in a press release. France is one of 31 European markets where this feature, called "ChatGPT Ads," is being rolled out. It has been available to advertisers in the United States since February and was recently expanded to eight other countries.

These ads appear in the free version of ChatGPT and Go, its entry-level subscription (€8 per month), but not in other subscription plans. Only users who are "over 18 years old" will see the ads.

OpenAI is aware that the issue is sensitive and that targeted advertising is unpopular with some users of online services. The company said it wants to maintain users' "trust" in its AI assistant. "Advertisements are clearly identified and separated from ChatGPT's responses. They do not influence those responses, advertisers do not have access to user conversations, and users remain in control," OpenAI stated, adding that the advertising data history used for targeting can be deleted.
