AI technology at traffic lights to be expanded in Glasgow

AI technology at traffic lights is set to be expanded in Glasgow in a bid to prioritise buses.

Paisley Road West and Aitkenhead Road will join Pollokshaws Road for the introduction of the technology.

The aim is to give buses more priority at key junctions and reduce delays on busy roads.

Speaking at the council's most recent city administration committee, Angus Millar, SNP, said the investment will allow the council to "progress further our innovative AI traffic signal optimisation project".

The convenor for transport said an initial pilot demonstrated early promise with "indications of a more than 30 per cent reduction in bus journey time in Pollokshaws Road".

The roll out of the "virtual loops and AI capability at traffic signals" will cost £650,000 according to the council.

The money is coming from Transport Scotland's Bus Infrastructure Fund Tier 2 funding for 2026 to 2027 and Glasgow is receiving £3.6 million.

A large chunk of the funding – £1.75 million – is to go towards bus priority work in Maryhill Road, Great Western Road, Dumbarton Road, Pollokshaws Road and Paisley Road West.

The busy routes will be assessed for future bus priority measures aimed at improving journey times and reliability.

Other projects being taken forward thanks to the funding are bus priority improvements on the A803 and traffic signal improvements and "appraisal for the construction of a new bus link through the SEC Campus and on to Glasgow Harbour".

The council has also received £450,000 from the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport, which will be used for a range of measures including bus lane enforcement cameras and better accessibility for subway stations.

Councillors sitting on the city administration committee approved the acceptance of the £3.6 million from the Bus Infrastructure Tier 2 fund last week.
