AI tool measures ‘heart age’

(Aging Untold) — Experts at the Mayo Clinic are using artificial intelligence to analyze echocardiograms, estimate a patient’s “heart age” and compare it with their actual age.

A heart age that comes back younger than a patient’s birthday is often a sign that heart-healthy habits are working. A result that comes back older is a signal to act.

Dr. Rhea Rogers, a board-certified physician and Aging Untold expert, said the first step is to focus on the basics.

“I would look at overall the foundation. Am I getting good sleep? What’s my diet look like? Am I outside walking, exercising? And am I managing my stress? All those different things are going to point to the same thing of lowering inflammation,” Rogers said.

Changes do not have to be dramatic to make a difference, she said.

“One of the simplest things you can do, doesn’t cost a lot of money, is just to go for a brisk walk, you know, and it’s very relaxing, and you’re getting movement and really you’re getting blood flow, so that’s one of the simplest things that you can do,” she said.

The goal is to use heart age results as motivation to make heart-healthy changes and maintain them. By addressing those factors, experts say a person can lower their heart age and improve overall health.
