Al Potter, a Newfoundland and Labrador man serving a life sentence for murder, has died in prison.

Potter died on Wednesday, according to a news release from Correctional Service Canada. He was 63.

Potter was convicted of first-degree murder in 2019 for killing 39-year-old Dale Porter in 2014. He had been serving a life sentence at Donnacona Institution in Donnacona, Que.

As recently as 2021, Potter had worked to appeal the conviction, an attempt that was rejected by the Supreme Court of Canada.
