Anthropic unveils Claude Tag, an AI assistant that can work across Slack channels
Anthropic has launched a new Slack integration that allows its Claude AI model to be added to channels where it can be assigned tasks, access approved company information, and build context from ongoing conversations.
Dubbed Claude Tag, the feature is launching in beta for Claude Enterprise and Team customers. It’s part of a broader push by AI companies to embed generative AI tools more deeply into workplace software.
Claude Tag will also replace the existing Claude in Slack application.
“Claude Tag is a new way for teams to work with Claude,” Anthropic said in its announcement.
The company says administrators can grant Claude access to selected Slack channels and connect it to approved tools, data sources and even codebases.
Team members can then tag @Claude in conversations and delegate tasks while continuing with other work.
Unlike traditional AI chatbots that operate within individual conversations, Claude Tag creates a shared AI identity for a team or channel.
Anthropic says the system builds context over time by following discussions, learning from approved information sources and remembering relevant details.
“Within a given Slack channel, there’s one Claude that interacts with everyone,” the company said. “Anyone can see what it’s working on, and can pick up the conversation from where the last person left off.”
Anthropic says this approach is intended to make Claude more useful in collaborative environments than traditional one-to-one chatbot interactions.
One of the more unusual features is what Anthropic calls “ambient” behaviour. This allows Claude to surface information, follow up on unresolved tasks, and flag developments it believes may be relevant.
“If ambient behaviour is enabled, Claude will proactively keep you updated about whatever it thinks you might need to know,” the company said.
Further, the AI assistant can work asynchronously, with Anthropic claiming Claude can schedule tasks for itself and continue pursuing projects autonomously over hours or days.
Anthropic also revealed how extensively similar systems are already being used internally.
According to the company, 65% of its product team’s code is now created by an internal version of Claude Tag. Employees are also using the system to analyse product metrics, investigate bugs and work through support tickets.
Major technology companies including Microsoft are pursuing similar strategies through workplace AI tools such as Copilot, while enterprise AI platforms including Glean, Snowflake and Databricks are building systems designed to connect AI models with company data and institutional knowledge.
Anthropic is positioning the launch as the next step beyond Claude Code into broader workplace tools.
“We see Claude Tag as the beginning of an evolution of Claude Code,” the company said.
“It makes the model even more proactive, and it works better with a full team.”
