Artificial Intelligence Reshapes Mali's Propaganda War - Report

A new study, Algorithms at War, has outlined how warring sides in Mali are increasingly using artificial intelligence (AI) to fight an information war alongside their battle on the ground. Compiled by the Dakar-based Timbuktu Institute, it examines how generative AI is being used across Mali's conflict - including by those linked to al-Qaeda and their allies.

"With artificial intelligence on the Malian front, we are moving from fairly rudimentary use by jihadist groups, for example, to a genuine professional machine on the Russian side," said Bakary Sambe, director of the Timbuktu Institute. The report revealed that terrorists are experimenting with relatively basic AI propaganda, while Russia's Africa Corps is using the technology on a far more sophisticated scale.
