ASIRT releases new details in investigation of fatal RCMP shooting near Irricana

One man died in July 3 incident after domestic disturbance call

Alberta's police watchdog has released more details on an officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of one man following an interaction last week near the community of Irricana, northeast of Calgary.

Around 6:20 p.m. on July 3, Airdrie RCMP officers responded to a 911 call from a woman reporting a domestic disturbance involving her boyfriend in a rural home near the town, according to a release from the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) on Friday.

Upon arrival, officers heard yelling from inside the home before the woman came out through the front door.

Officers stayed near the entrance and called for the man to come outside, but he did not respond, the release says.

A few minutes later, the man came to the front door and began walking toward the officers with what appeared to be a handgun, the release says. One officer then fired their gun multiple times, striking the man.

Despite life-saving measures taken at the scene, the man was declared deceased.

ASIRT said the incident was captured on the body-worn cameras officers were wearing.

The Police Review Commission has directed ASIRT to investigate the incident as a Level 1 matter under the Police Act, a classification that refers to incidents involving serious injury or death, as well as serious or sensitive allegations involving police actions.
