'Ask us anything': Mosque opens doors to public

Peterborough's Joint Mosque Council says holding an open day is "more necessary than ever", to help bring cohesion among communities.

People of all faiths and none are invited to the city's biggest mosque, Faizan-E-Madina, on Gladstone Street, on Sunday for the annual event.

Attendees will have the opportunity to have open conversations about Islam, observe prayers and connect with the Muslim community.

Abdul Choudhuri, chairman of the Joint Mosque Council, said: "Our aim is, that the barrier should be broken down, people should understand we live and work together."

Choudhuri added: "Britain is generally a tolerant country, but misinformation and the rise of right-wing extremism have caused more division in recent years.

"That is why programmes like this one [open day] are now especially important."

Choudhuri said the open day encourages people to ask questions and learn more about Islam.

He said the event aimed to "explain the basic principles of Islam and promote better understanding and bust myths" through conversations and information displays.

"Ask about our faith, our Islam, what we believe, and any kind of question they have in their minds which they think will help their understanding. We have no objection," he said.

The event will also have stores selling cultural items and food.
