WACO, Texas — A Texas music legend is coming home.

For the first time since attending Baylor University in 1954, country icon Willie Nelson will return to Waco for a special performance.

University officials say the moment has been decades in the making and reflects a broader effort to expand live entertainment options in Central Texas.

Willie Nelson and Family will perform Thursday, May 14, at Magnolia Field at Baylor Ballpark, marking the venue’s first concert. Gates open at 6 p.m., and the show begins at 7:30 p.m.

Baylor Chief Marketing Officer Jason Cook said the performance stems in part from a long-running rumor that Nelson had been banned from campus.

“There’s been this long-standing rumor that Willie Nelson has been banned from the Baylor campus,” Cook said. “President Livingstone and I talked about how to put that to rest, and the answer was simple — invite Willie back.”

Cook said the timing ultimately aligned, allowing the university to host Nelson more than 70 years after he was a student.

The concert is part of a larger push by Baylor to position Waco as a destination for live entertainment. Cook said the university has spent months building relationships with major talent agencies and promoting its venues.

“We’ve had facilities, but it’s taken a very consistent approach to establish those relationships and say that we’re open for business,” Cook said.

In recent months, Baylor has hosted a growing number of high-profile events, including performances by the Harlem Globetrotters and rising country artist Hudson Westbrook, along with shows at McLane Stadium and Foster Pavilion.

Cook said the goal is to offer a variety of entertainment options for the region.

“We want to have something for the entire community,” he said. “We’re working to find acts that appeal to a wide range of people throughout Central Texas.”

Additional events are already drawing strong interest, including an upcoming concert featuring Post Malone and Jelly Roll.

Baylor leaders say Nelson’s return is about more than music — it’s a full-circle moment for one of Texas’ most iconic artists.

Presale tickets will be available on Thursday, April 9 for students and Bear Foundation members. Tickets for the general public go on sale Friday morning.
