Calgary man charged with manslaughter after teenager fatally overdoses

Steve Phillip Gilbert Collins, 40, charged after death of 16-year-old

A man has been charged with manslaughter after the death of a 16-year-old girl in northeast Calgary.

Police say the girl was found dead on Nov. 28, 2025, the day after she and another 16-year-old met with the man in downtown Calgary and went to his home in the 8300 block of Centre Street N.E.

It's believed drugs were consumed before one of the girls was found unconscious, after which the man called 911, police said.

The girl couldn't be revived by emergency crews. Her cause of death was determined to be caused by the opioid carfentanil.

“This is a heartbreaking loss, and we extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family,” Staff Sgt. Sean Gregson of the Calgary Police Service undercover operations unit said in a statement.

Steve Phillip Gilbert Collins, 40, was taken into custody on Thursday and faces one charge of manslaughter in relation to the girl's death.

Charges were laid after an investigation by the Calgary Police Service Drug Investigations for Safer Communities (DISC) Team, which directly targets drug traffickers, and after police consulted the Crown prosecutor.

“Illicit drugs continue to have a devastating impact, particularly on vulnerable individuals in our community," Gregson said.

"This is exactly why the DISC Team was created — to ensure every overdose is thoroughly investigated and to target those responsible for trafficking these dangerous substances.”

Collins will next appear in court on July 6.
