Canada sets opening of Labrador biometrics site for January 2027

Canada's federal government has announced plans to expand collection of biometrics in Labrador, starting operations in January of 2027.

When the new site is operational, individuals seeking immigration services in Labrador will be able to have their biometrics collected in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

As of the time of writing, many individuals based in Labrador travel to Newfoundland to have their biometrics collected in St. John's, which from Happy Valley-Goose Bay is a journey of 900km by air, or 1600km by car and ferry.

Immigration Minister Lena Diab announced the opening at a press conference in St. John's the morning of September 29, 2026.

For immigration applications, biometrics includes an individual's photograph and fingerprints.

Biometrics requirements are applicable to applications for temporary residence and permanent residence (PR), as well as to renewals of PR cards for individuals who had been age-exempt from biometrics when they first applied for PR.

Happy Valley-Goose Bay is the largest population centre in Labrador, with 8,040 residents reported in the 2021 Census.
