Canada unhappy with latest US offer to lower tariffs, CBC reports

Aug 12 (Reuters) - Canadian officials working to persuade Washington not to impose additional ‌tariffs next week are unhappy with the ‌latest U.S. offer to ease the measures, CBC News ​reported on Wednesday, citing two sources.

U.S. President Donald Trump said last month he would impose 50% tariffs on a wide range of ‌imports from Canada ⁠on August 19 unless Ottawa ended what he called discriminatory treatment of ⁠American-made cars, alcohol and dairy goods.

The two sides are holding daily negotiations in Washington in ​an effort ​to work out ​a deal. In ‌return for concessions, Canada is seeking relief from the tariffs that Trump imposed on a raft of imports last year.

CBC said the U.S. side offered a new proposal on Tuesday ‌that would lower some ​tariffs but not by as ​much as ​the Canadians wanted.

The offices of U.S. ‌Trade Representative Jamieson Greer ​and Dominic ​LeBlanc, the Canadian federal minister in charge of U.S. trade, did not respond to ​requests for ‌comment.
