Canada’s tornado count ticking up as two new twisters confirmed

We've seen at least 41 tornadoes touch down across Canada so far this year, with severe thunderstorms adding two twisters to that count in the past week.

The heart of summer is prime tornado season for much of the country, so this number is likely to grow in the weeks ahead.

DON'T MISS: Tornado season is underway in Canada. Here's what you need to know

Tornadoes confirmed in Ontario, New Brunswick this week

Officials with Western University's Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP) confirmed EF-1 damage near Glencoe, Ont., during a storm on June 25.

The twister packed estimated maximum winds of 145 km/h as it tracked along a path measuring nearly 10 km long. Experts surveyed the track on foot and by drone, finding damage to barns, trailers, homes, and trees in the area.

Another confirmed tornado touched down in southern New Brunswick the following day as a strong thunderstorm tracked into the province. The NTP posted on Bluesky that someone captured video of the tornado as it churned up debris about 25-30 km southwest of Moncton. Further details are pending.

Tornado season ramping up across Canada

Alberta makes up a significant portion of the country's overall count so far this year, accounting for 21 of the 41 tornadoes confirmed across Canada.

An average year produces around 65 tornadoes throughout Canada every year, with the Prairies witnessing roughly half of a typical season's activity.

It's likely that a number of tornadoes go unnoticed and unreported due to the relatively sparse population throughout much of the country, though the NTP works to identify those hard-to-reach suspected tornado tracks.

U.S. tornado count inching toward 1,000

A rambunctious season continues just south of the border. The U.S. is the world's most tornado-prone country, averaging around 1,200 touchdowns each year.

As of June 28, the U.S. National Weather Service has confirmed 930 tornadoes from California to Vermont. The strongest was an EF-4 that struck Enid, Oklahoma, on April 23.

Illinois has been hit unusually hard over the past few months, racking up nearly 20 per cent of all tornadoes confirmed in the U.S. so far this year.
