Cape Breton teen raises $21K through hotdog sales, donations

With the help of a humble hotdog stand and multiple donations, a Cape Breton teen raised $21,000 for Make-A-Wish Canada.

This past weekend, 13-year-old Jake Campbell and his family sold the hotdogs, with supplies donated from No Frills and Wonder Bread.

In an interview with Information Morning Cape Breton, Campbell said he and his family raised $3,000 last year by selling hotdogs.

“This year I wanted to try to at least double it, so obviously, we did,” Campbell said.

Campbell said he and his family set up their hotdog stand this year in the Russell Hawkins parking lot in Sydney, N.S.

He said on top of the money collected from selling hotdogs, people also donated cash.

“It’s pretty incredible,” said Hollie Quick, a senior development officer for Make-A-Wish Canada at the Nova Scotia chapter.

“Just completely honoured that the whole community would come out to support us the way Sydney did.”

Quick said when Campbell and his family fundraised last year, Campbell was given an award in honour of a wish kid who passed away.

“I guess it must have really inspired him to do even more this year because he came back in a really big way,” Quick said.

She added that with the cash the Campbells raised, the foundation will start tackling the wishes of the 81 children in Nova Scotia on their list.

She said past wishes have ranged from creating an accessible place in their home so they can spend more time in the fresh air, to a trip with their families.

Campbell said he was happy to fundraise for the foundation because it helps support more than just the children.

“Who knows, it could be their last wish,” he said. “It helps the whole family, not just the kid.”

Campbell said he doesn’t know exactly how much of the total was from pure hotdog sales. He added he has big plans for next year.
