City officials, Red Cross give update on Ottawa flood response

Ottawa city officials are holding a 2 p.m. ET news conference with the Canadian Red Cross to discuss the latest developments in the city’s response to the major flash flooding on July 1.

Ravaging thunderstorms tore through the nation’s capital on Canada Day, dumping up to 167 millimetres of rain which caused major flooding in some areas.

With more than 6,000 flooded basements reported to the city, councillors recently approved a motion to enter into a formal partnership with the Canadian Red Cross, making them the lead non-governmental organization for flood recovery.

The City of Ottawa announced on Thursday that residents who were significantly impacted by the flash flooding can apply for property tax relief.

Part of the city’s relief plan with the Red Cross, which is the lead non-governmental organization for flood recovery, includes public information sessions to share resources and safety tips with flood victims.

Five upcoming sessions are happening at Ben Franklin Place in Nepean and the John G. Mlacak Centre in Kanata betweem July 24 and 30.

Thousands still recovering from record-breaking Canada Day storm

The Red Cross announced the start of its donation campaign for local flood victims last week, saying that money would go toward relief, recovery and resilience, preparation for future natural disasters and supporting partner agency work.

The province has also launched a disaster relief program, DRAO, which is designed to help homeowners in certain areas restore their damaged property.
