Council homes approved at Battersea Power Station

Plans for 203 council homes at Battersea Power Station have been approved as part of the site's £9bn regeneration.

Wandsworth Council has agreed proposals to build the homes on an undeveloped plot on the 42-acre site, working with Battersea Power Station Development Company (BPSDC).

They will be offered to people on the council's waiting list, with the council holding a long lease on the land, owned by freeholder BPSDC.

The partnership was announced last year by the council's previous Labour administration.

Labour had criticised the masterplan, approved under Conservative control, for including 386 affordable homes, or about 9%, of roughly 4,000 properties, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS).

The application had not been approved when Labour lost control of the council at May's local elections. The Conservatives now run a minority administration.

The homes will be in a building of up to 18 storeys, with communal gardens and a roof garden. Construction is due to start in 2027, with residents expected to move in by 2029.

They are in addition to affordable housing already agreed by the developer, taking the total to 15%.

Conservative council leader Robert Morritt said the decision "kick-starts an exciting time for Wandsworth as we move at pace to deliver more high-quality homes for rent or sale across our borough".

The scheme will be supported by Greater London Authority grant funding.

Deputy mayor for housing Tom Copley said he and the mayor were "proud to be working with Battersea Power Station and Wandsworth Council" to deliver social housing.

BPSDC chief executive James Saunders said the homes were "another important milestone in the delivery of our vision for Battersea Power Station".

In March last year 11,183 households were on Wandsworth's housing waiting list, of whom 3,771 were homeless.

The homes form part of phase five of the eight-phase regeneration. More than 2,200 have been built so far, including 386 affordable homes at New Mansion Square with Peabody.
