Crews battle large fire at Brampton scrap metal yard, no one injured, officials say

Large plume of smoke moved into residential areas of Mississauga Tuesday evening: police

Crews continued to fight a large fire at a scrap metal yard in an industrial area of Brampton on Tuesday night, though no injuries have been reported, officials say.

The fire was located on a commercial property near the intersection of Intermodal and Goreway drives, Brampton Fire and Emergency Services said in a post on X Tuesday.

Peel Regional Police said they were called by Brampton Fire at about 4:20 p.m. to help manage traffic in the area.

Const. Tyler Bell-Morena, spokesperson for Peel police, said the fire was believed to be burning piles of recycling material.

He said heavy smoke initially reduced visibility in the area of Steeles Avenue W. and Highway 407, south of the property, but the wind pushed the large plume of smoke higher and visibility was less of a problem by 8:30 p.m.

The wind also pushed the smoke into residential areas of Mississauga, however, he said. Residents and motorists in the areas were urged to keep their windows closed.

"Residents may hear periodic booms in the area. That could just be from buildup of pockets of air within these piles. The fire department is not concerned about it so we shouldn't be," he said.

Bell-Morena described the blaze as a "very large working fire," contained to the back of the property. Flames could be seen at several different areas of the fire, he said.

He said Brampton Fire had several firefighters and fire trucks at the scene and they were not concerned that it would spread beyond the property.

Police urged motorists to use alternate routes and avoid the area. Onlookers were causing traffic congestion near the fire, he added.

Intermodal Drive was closed west of Goreway Drive as crews worked to put out the fire.
