Criminality suspected after man's remains found near Debert

Police are asking anyone with information to contact them

Authorities are working to confirm the identity of a man whose remains were found in a wooded area near Debert, N.S., last month.

RCMP say they were called after the human remains were found on July 22. Police recovered the remains and confirmed the deceased was a man.

Police say they are working with the provincial medical examiner to determine who the man was and the circumstances of his death.

Police say criminality is a factor in his death, but did not give any further details and would not comment on how recent the remains appeared to be.

Investigators do not believe there is a risk to the public.

RCMP Cpl. Mandy Edwards told CBC News there have been extensive searches and neighbourhood inquiries made in the area as part of the investigation.

"It could be something that may seem insignificant, may seem small," Edwards said.

"If they have any knowledge of what happened, any suspicious activity that had occurred before or on July 22 — please report that information to police."
