Disabled residents asked to shape region's future

Disabled residents are being asked to share their views on how their region can become more accessible and inclusive.

The first West Berkshire Disability Access Forum meeting, on 6 August, from 10:30 to 12:30 BST at the council's Market Street offices, will look to shape future policies.

Focusing on physical accessibility, the meeting will give attendees the opportunity to share their experiences and suggest ways to improve access and inclusion across West Berkshire.

Councillor Vicky Poole said: "When it comes to making change happen, it's best to hear about the challenges from disabled persons and families directly, as they have the lived experience."

The forum was established to ensure the experiences and perspectives of disabled people help shape future policies, services and local planning.

It was intended to provide a direct channel for residents to raise concerns, identify barriers and work collaboratively with the council and partner organisations to create a more accessible district.

Poole said: "I would encourage people to join in, whether in person, online or via YouTube replay."

Residents were encouraged to submit questions in advance by emailing the council before 16:00 on 5 August. Questions could also be asked during the event.

The forum was expected to meet at least twice a year to help inform discussions on a range of issues affecting disabled residents, including experiences of council services, community issues, access to education and training.

Future meetings would be driven by the priorities and experiences raised by participants.
