Driver charged after 2 pedestrians hit in Smiths Falls
A woman faces several criminal charges after two pedestrians were struck by a vehicle Friday evening in Smiths Falls, Ont., local police say.
The two people were walking along the south end of Empress Avenue just before 8 p.m. when they were struck by a silver Cadillac, the Smiths Falls Police Service said in a news release Saturday.
The Cadillac then left the road and collided with a fence, police said.
Both pedestrians were taken to Ottawa trauma centres with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
As for the driver, police said she abandoned the vehicle a short distance away and fled. She was apprehended roughly two hours later and remains in custody pending a bail hearing, they added.
Police have not identified her or said what specific charges she is facing.
Smiths Falls police are asking anyone who saw the crash or captured it on video to come forward.
