Edmonton machine shop fined $217,000 related to workplace fatality

An Edmonton machine shop has been fined for a 2024 workplace fatality.

Rylex Machine & Supply Ltd. pleaded guilty on Monday to one count under the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) code in relation to a worker's death, according to a Thursday release from the province. Remaining charges were withdrawn. The shop was charged after a worker became entangled in a manual lathe's moving parts and died at the fabrication shop on March 4, 2024.

The company was fined $1,000 by the court, including a victim fine surcharge. In addition, the court ordered the company to pay $216,000 to NAIT to allow the polytechnic to purchase a dual-spindle lathe and invest in education that promotes a strong workplace culture among future trades workers. Rylex Machine & Supply was also placed on two years of enhanced regulatory supervision.

The company and the Crown have up to 30 days to appeal the conviction or penalty.

Under OHS, companies are required to assess hazards and develop policies and procedures that address workplace hazards. They are also required to do everything reasonably possible to eliminate or reduce a hazard and develop procedures that workers follow to ensure the best possible outcome.
