Eve Hewson had 'big nerves' starting Spielberg film

Eve Hewson has said she had 'big nerves' ahead of her first day on the set of Steven Spielberg’s new film Disclosure Day.

Hewson recalled the moment she found out he wanted to speak to her about the role of Jane, a former nun whose partner Daniel (Josh O’Connor) is a whistleblower aiming to make decades of secret information about extra-terrestrial encounters public.

"I had some sort of panic attack when I found out Steven wanted to talk to me about a movie and it was a secret for some reason. I don’t think I told my family, I didn’t tell anybody for a while," she told RTÉ Entertainment.

Review: Disclosure Day: Spielberg is still the sci-fi master

"I just had all this weird energy in my body and I didn’t know what to do with it. So I just drove to the Westfield Century City mall [in Los Angeles] and bought loads of socks. It was a panic buy situation. What do I do with all this energy? Socks!"

Spielberg told RTÉ Entertainment that her ‘extraordinary’ performance in Bad Sisters meant she got the part ‘pretty quickly’.

Hewson’s character’s faith is at the heart of the film as she wonders how knowledge of alien life will impact peoples’ beliefs.

"I remember Steven said to me on set, ‘A lot of people are going to side with your character, and it will start an interesting conversation’," she said.

"It was really interesting learning about why people go into being a novitiate and thinking about why she left and that turmoil she was going through. I really enjoyed playing her."

Wyatt Russell also stars in the film, playing Emily Blunt’s character’s partner Jackson.

He used the opportunity of working with Spielberg to ‘be a sponge’.

"I probably annoyed him with all the questions, and I just hung around him while he was shooting other stuff," he told RTÉ Entertainment.

"What was incredible is, he was so invested in the film and the day, it’s incredible the energy he brings after this long a career - it doesn’t get old to him, every day to him is a gift and he brings that energy to every minute of every day, not because he’s trying, just because that’s the way he is."

Working on the film did not change Russell’s outlook on alien life.

"Gotta be something out there... I don’t know what it is or what it looks like but it’s gotta be there," he said.

While Hewson added, "I was not against the idea at all but now I'm all the way in."

Disclosure Day hits cinemas on Wednesday.
