Fire spread to 11 garden sheds near railway station

A fire service spent two hours tackling a blaze which started in a garden and spread to 11 sheds and a builders' yard next to a railway station.

Suffolk Fire & Rescue Service said crews arrived at Creeting Road West in Stowmarket to find 11 garden sheds, various fences and 50 pallets alight at about 18:00 BST on Sunday.

At the height of the fire, the service's group manager Chris May said 10 appliances were there and crews worked alongside railway staff and British Transport Police.

At 18:47, National Rail said a nearby fire had led to all lines being blocked with services delayed or revised until 19:27.

In a video posted on Facebook, May said: "This particular fire in Creeting Road has attracted a significant fire and rescue presence involving 11 sheds, 11 gardens and cylinders that were quite significant hazards to our staff.

"The fire also spread to a neighbouring builders' yard catching a large pile of wooden pallets. It also affected the Stowmarket railway line which involved being closed for a short amount of time.

"Let's be really mindful when carrying out barbecues, or leaving rubbish and litter outside in grass areas — these things can easily catch fire due to the dry weather and the hot conditions we are facing."

The service said the fire was extinguished by 20:10.
