FirstWave Cloud Technology Files Patent for AI Network Monitoring System
FirstWave Cloud Technology FCT has filed a provisional patent application for an AI-driven network monitoring and fault diagnosis system designed to detect network faults and automatically investigate their root causes.
The technology uses a multi-agent AI architecture orchestrated by large language models to reason over network context, test competing explanations, and provide an explainable diagnosis rather than relying on a single model response.
FirstWave is preparing the technology for commercial launch as either new features for existing products or a stand-alone module, targeting a network monitoring business that generated A$6.9 million in revenue in the 2026 financial year.
The invention emerged from research involving FirstWave, the University of the Sunshine Coast, and CSIRO, with FirstWave the sole owner and sole applicant for the patent filed with IP Australia on 3 September 2026.
The research collaboration was jointly funded by the three parties under CSIRO’s Regional University Industry Collaboration (RUIC) program, with commercialisation now moving toward launch.
The system extends FirstWave’s NMIS, opEvents, and opCharts products and is built into the NMIS suite, allowing it to work with device history and telemetry that existing FirstWave software already collects.
Specialised AI agents coordinate their investigations by applying network context and operational knowledge, with the aim of rapidly ruling out possible explanations until they reach a verified diagnosis and potentially an automated resolution.
Engineers can interact with the AI through a conversational interface, direct further investigation, request alternative solutions and approve a final fix, with each approved response then captured as operational knowledge for future incidents.
Adaptive thresholds are designed to learn the normal operating behaviour of each device so abnormal patterns can trigger alerts and investigation, potentially identifying faults while they are developing and before they cause an outage.
FirstWave says key clients including John Deere and Telmex have requested the capability, while the use of data already held within its installed software gives the technology a pathway into existing customer environments without requiring a separate data collection platform.
The company is particularly targeting organisations that keep network management systems on premise, with the cited market research estimating that such deployments represented about 53% of the network management market in 2025.
“Network monitoring is our largest and fastest-growing revenue line and this patent is a deliberate decision to put AI at the centre of it,” chief executive officer Danny Maher said.
Vice-president of products Sharon Honeybell called the collaboration a “great example of research translating into a real, tangible outcome for industry."
Research cited by FirstWave valued the global network management systems market at US$12.3 billion in 2025 and forecast it to reach US$27.1b by 2033, while the self-healing networks segment was forecast to grow from US$960m in 2024 to US$5.b by 2030.
