Ford to speak in Hamilton amid Canada-U.S. trade war

Ontario Premier Doug Ford and members of his cabinet will be holding a news conference in Hamilton Monday, as the fallout from the Canada-U.S. trade war continues.

Ford will be joined by Economic Development Minister Vic Fedeli and Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy. They are expected to share their remarks at 1:30 p.m. ET, according to an advisory from the premier's office.

The news conference comes after Canada-U.S. trade talks collapsed last week, with Prime Minister Mark Carney telling his negotiators to walk away from the table after the Trump administration introduced late demands that Carney said asked for "too much and offered too little."

"We cannot accept what they've offered, and we will not give what they've asked," he said Saturday in Ottawa.

Trump threatens new 50% tariffs on Canadian cars, trucks and steel

Fifty per cent U.S. tariffs on about $28-billion worth of Canadian goods came into effect early Saturday as a result of the failed talks. Carney said retaliatory, dollar-for-dollar tariffs will hit the U.S. starting Sept. 8.

Ford said Saturday that he was "glad" the prime minister didn't sign the pact "because it was a bad deal."

"We need to fight these tariffs, tariff to tariff, dollar to dollar," he told reporters.

Ford and other premiers have largely backed Carney's decision to reject the trade deal.
