Friday stabbing leaves one man dead in East Village
A man is dead after a stabbing occurred Friday night in Calgary's East Village.
The Calgary Police Service said it was initially called to the area after receiving reports that an assault with a weapon had occurred in the 500 block of 7th Avenue S.E.
One man, with serious injuries, was found on the scene and transported to hospital; however, those injuries proved fatal.
Police said the investigation into the incident is ongoing and the service is asking anyone with information about the stabbing to call them at 403-266-1234 or to submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, at www.crimestoppers.org, or by using the app P3 Tips.
In recent months, Calgary police have worked to address crime in several areas of the city – including East Village – through daylong community blitzes that see uniformed officers patrolling the streets, resulting in arrests, court summonses and referrals to social agencies.
"While Calgary remains a safe city by national standards, the pressure on our system continues to grow," police chief Katie McLellan noted in an opinion piece for the Herald this summer.
