Globus Medical Acquires Higgs Boson Health To Add AI

Globus Medical has acquired Higgs Boson Health, adding artificial intelligence, software development and digital healthcare capabilities to its expanding musculoskeletal technology ecosystem. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Higgs Boson Health is a Durham, North Carolina-based digital healthcare experience company that was incubated out of Duke University. Globus Medical plans to use the acquired company’s technology and personnel to improve how patients and healthcare providers interact throughout the full episode of care.

The acquisition brings Higgs Boson’s team of software developers and AI scientists into Globus Medical.

Globus Founder and Executive Chairman David Paul said the technology will support the company’s vision for a more seamless digital healthcare environment that simplifies the patient journey while providing healthcare providers with better real-time information and surgical intelligence.

The transaction also advances Globus Medical’s broader strategy of building an integrated technology ecosystem around musculoskeletal care.

Higgs Boson’s technology will become part of the company’s surgical intelligence pillar, connecting patient outcomes and analytics through what Globus describes as a closed-loop system designed to enable continuous learning.

The company plans to integrate those capabilities across the patient journey rather than limiting them to the operating room.

That approach could allow information captured before, during and after procedures to contribute to a broader picture of patient outcomes and clinical decision-making.

Globus Medical operates across spine, orthopedic trauma, joint reconstruction, biomaterials and enabling technologies.

The Higgs Boson acquisition adds a dedicated digital healthcare and AI component to those existing capabilities as Globus builds technology intended to connect providers and patients throughout an episode of musculoskeletal care.

Management has set an ambitious long-term objective around the initiative, with Paul describing a goal of achieving 95% good outcomes at 10 years across musculoskeletal surgeries.

“Higgs Boson employs highly experienced teams of software developers and AI scientists who will be joining our team to power our vision of a seamless digital healthcare environment to simplify a patient’s journey through our healthcare system while enhancing real-time information and surgical intelligence available to healthcare providers with the ultimate goal of getting to 95% good outcomes at 10 years for all musculoskeletal surgeries.”
