Gravediggers compete in Hungary to spotlight a demanding profession

Nineteen two-man teams competed Saturday in a grave-digging competition in northern Hungary, turning mounds of earth in a bid to spotlight the physical demands and professionalism of a trade often overshadowed by taboos surrounding death. At a public cemetery in Nyergesújfalu, teams were judged on speed and style as they dug graves to exact specifications, 1.6 meters (5.5 feet) deep, 2 meters (6.5 feet) long and 0.8 meters (2.6 feet) wide, using only spades, shovels and pickaxes.
