Halifax-bound Air Canada flight diverted to Boston after captain experiences medical issue

Work underway to help 61 AC7664 customers make new travel arrangements

An Air Canada flight bound for Halifax on Wednesday afternoon from Newark, N.J., was diverted to Boston after its captain experienced a medical issue.

In an email, Air Canada said the captain of flight AC7664 was removed from the flight deck "per safety protocols" and the first officer took control of the aircraft and safely landed the plane, a De Havilland Q400, at Boston Logan International Airport.

"Pilots are trained to fly aircraft and land safely without the assistance of a second pilot," Air Canada told CBC News.

The Massachusetts State Police told CBC News in an email that the flight was diverted at 1:40 p.m. local time "when a crew member reported a medical emergency."

Air Canada said the flight, which was operated by its regional partner PAL Airlines, carried 61 customers and that work is underway to help them make new travel arrangements "to complete their journeys as soon as possible."

The airline said the captain was taken for medical treatment in Boston.
