Hato makes World Cup debut but Dutch defeated | News | Official Site
Jorrel Hato played his first game at the 2026 World Cup but it ended in heartbreak as the Netherlands were knocked out on penalties by Morocco.
Hato was brought off the bench with four minutes of normal time remaining, replacing Micky van de Ven in the left wing-back role.
By that point the Dutch were 1-0 up courtesy of a 72nd-minute goal from Cody Gakpo, but the Moroccans levelled in the first minute of stoppage time when Fulham’s Issa Diop crashed home a header.
It was no less than the African side deserved, with Bart Verbruggen forced into several fine saves. Achraf Hakimi also struck the bar.
In extra-time, Verbruggen produced one of the saves of the tournament to thwart Morocco sub Soufiane Rahimi. It finished 1-1 so for the second consecutive Round of 32 tie – following Germany’s loss to Paraguay – penalties were required to separate two of the World Cup's dark horses.
Both sides missed two of their first four spot-kicks – none even hitting the target – before Crysencio Summerville was denied by a strong hand from Yassine Bounou, who had moved to his right before the spot-kick was taken. That allowed Ismail Saibari to fire in the winner, ending the Netherlands’ dream of winning a maiden World Cup.
