Hourly pay for technology jobs in finance is more than double what most engineers are earning

Technology jobs in finance can be a bit gruelling compared to other engineering roles, but the pay is often worth it. A new survey from Devographics, State of Devs 2026, suggests financial services technologists earn much more than the rest.

The Devographics survey broke down average yearly compensation and average hours worked per week for technology professionals based on over 5,000 global responses. It found that tech staff on average work just under 40 hours per week, but also earn just $93k per year. Our 2026 Compensation Guide found that tech staff in finance make $264k on average at an average hourly pay of $116.

Where you work, of course, has a strong bearing on both hours and pay. Tech staff in France and the UK each work under 38 hours per week on average, but UK staff earn over $30k more per year. The Devographics survey found that engineers in the US and India worked the same number of hours on average, but American tech staff earned over four times the total annual compensation.

There are other curious differences between engineering jobs in different regions. The majority of respondents to the Devographics survey in India said they had just one computer monitor, whereas the majority of tech staff in the US and UK had two or more. US and UK engineers were equally likely to suffer from mental health issues, but US engineers were more likely to suffer from weight issues. UK staff also had a higher proportion of hybrid workers and a lower proportion of fully remote staff than the US.
