Illinois passes AI Safety Measures Act
SPRINGFIELD, Ill.—Artificial Intelligence operating in Illinois will have new regulations and safeguards starting next year.
The Illinois General Assembly passed the Artificial Intelligence Safety Measures Act on Wednesday.
Illinois is leading the nation in holding Big Tech accountable. As AI systems impact people’s lives, we need safeguards in place. I look forward to signing SB 315 and working with the legislature so that AI, when used, is used responsibly.
This new act requires AI companies to be more transparent of their operation, report critical safety incidents within 72 hours and sets dozens of new FOIA rules. Whistleblowers are also protected with the act.
“Governor Pritzker believes that AI is already reshaping economies, education, and other facets of everyday life that require action and oversight from states.”
The Artificial Intelligence Safety Measures Act goes into effect on January 1, 2027.
