India’s Embassy showcases Bihar’s heritage and cuisine in Baku

The Embassy of India in Azerbaijan has hosted a Bihar Diwas celebration in Baku, presenting the Indian state of Bihar’s cultural heritage, history, tourism potential, traditional crafts and cuisine.

The event, held on August 13, brought together ambassadors, members of the diplomatic corps, government and business representatives, media professionals, social media influencers, members of the Indian diaspora and Azerbaijani guests, News.Az reports, citing the Embassy of India.

Addressing the event, Indian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Abhay Kumar highlighted Bihar’s role in India’s civilizational history, noting its links to Buddhism and Jainism and its status as the heartland of the ancient Magadha Empire.

He also drew attention to Nalanda, one of the world’s oldest centres of learning, and the Mahabodhi Temple at Bodh Gaya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The ambassador recalled Bihar’s association with prominent historical figures, including Emperor Ashoka, mathematician and astronomer Aryabhata, philosopher Chanakya, India’s first president Rajendra Prasad and political leader Jayaprakash Narayan.

Kumar invited guests to explore Bihar as a destination for history, spirituality, culture and tourism.

A fashion show featuring members of the Azerbaijani community and the Indian diaspora presented traditional Indian costumes reflecting Bihar’s cultural heritage.

Guests were also introduced to authentic Bihari cuisine prepared by chefs from India, including traditional savoury dishes and sweets.

The programme featured a display of some of Bihar’s distinctive products, including Makhana, Bhagalpuri Silk, Madhubani prints and Dal Chadar, highlighting the state’s agricultural, textile and handicraft traditions.

Music and dance performances inspired by Bihar’s traditions were also presented during the evening.

The embassy said the celebration formed part of its efforts to introduce Azerbaijanis to India’s cultural diversity and strengthen people-to-people ties and mutual understanding between India and Azerbaijan.
