India's startup funding decline: Investor caution and regulatory impact on venture capital
India's startup ecosystem has long been celebrated as one of the world's fastest-growing innovation hubs. Home to over 1.5 lakh DPIIT-recognised startups and the third-largest startup ecosystem globally, the country has attracted billions in venture capital over the past decade. However, recent developments indicate that while entrepreneurial ambition remains strong, investor sentiment is becoming increasingly cautious.According to the latest industry data, private equity and venture capital (PE-VC) investments in India declined to $6.45 billion in Q2 2026, a 3% year-on-year drop and a sharp 42% decline compared to the previous quarter. Alongside this, an Oxford Economics report warns that restrictive digital regulations could reduce annual venture capital investment by as much as 25% by 2035, while leading to fewer startups, lower job creation, and diminished innovation.
