Japan's local mascot characters gather at Hikonyan's home
More than 150 local mascot characters from across Japan have gathered in Hikone City in Shiga Prefecture, western Japan. Hikone is home to the popular cat-like mascot Hikonyan.
The event held over the weekend is the 17th edition of the "local character expo," which has been hosted by Hikone as part of its effort to revitalize the area.
Mascots taking part along with Hikonyan included Kumamon, the bear-like character representing Kumamoto. The southwestern prefecture was struck by a major earthquake in July this year.
The local characters posed for photos with visitors at the venue near Hikone Castle, and interacted comically with each other.
Organizers set up booths to promote the hometowns of each mascot. Visitors enjoyed buying local specialties and character goods.
A fifth-grade elementary school student from Aichi Prefecture said she came to meet the character from Fukui Prefecture, also in central Japan, as she is a great fan. She said she looked forward to having a photo taken with the character.
Her mother said this is their first visit and they are surprised by people's enthusiasm. She said it is fun to be able to meet so many different characters she is not familiar with.
