JAXA Earth Observation Center holds annual open day
A Japanese space agency facility in Saitama Prefecture, north of Tokyo, attracted many visitors when it was opened to the public on Saturday.
The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's Earth Observation Center in Hatoyama Town receives data from satellites. It holds an open house once a year.
Many people, including families, took part in events to help children become more familiar with space.
A JAXA researcher gave quizzes to explain the role of earth observation satellites that use radar to assess the situation when a disaster occurs. The participants enthusiastically asked questions.
Visitors were also seen examining displays of satellite models and other items with keen interest.
An elementary school boy said his dream is to become an astronaut and he was glad he could learn more about satellites.
JAXA researcher Kato Ryo said it was very encouraging to have so many visitors again this year.
