Kerala University denies preparing draft to restrict campus politics
KSU workers protest at Kerala University - File photo Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala University vice-chancellor Mohanan Kunnummal has clarified that the document circulating as a draft proposal to restrict political activities on its campuses was not an original university document and that no such proposal has been prepared by the university.A controversy erupted after a document reportedly proposed restrictions on political activities on university campuses, including protests, dharnas and blockades. It also suggested restrictions on raising political slogans, organising programmes featuring individuals with an alleged anti-national background and conducting political campaigns through digital platforms. The reported proposals drew opposition from student organisations, which alleged that such restrictions would curtail democratic activities on campuses. Former chief minister and opposition leader Pinarayi Vijayan criticised the reported move, describing it as undemocratic. The VC, however, said the university had not finalised any such guidelines. He had earlier said that the university was examining the issue in the context of directives issued by Kerala High Court. The controversy has brought renewed focus on the role of political activities on campuses and the balance between maintaining an academic environment and protecting students’ democratic rights.Stay updated with the latest Thiruvananthapuram news.
