Letter: Artificial Intelligence has become 'self
Open the pod bay doors, HAL.""I'm sorry, Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that."We have arrived at this point dramatized in Stanley Kubrick's 1968 movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. As recently reported, artificial intelligence has become "self-improving" and has gone rogue, operating outside human alignment with the percentage of risk to human existence uncertain. We already have enough AI with applications spewing deepfakes, messing with kids minds, running business, controlling infrastructure, generating music, vacuuming floors. You name it.But now it has become a national security threat which no one is sure how to regulate. Powerful, wealthy AI companies, knowingly or unknowingly developing this runaway technology, are responsible for this terrorism that human intervention will be unable to stop.It may be a little hard on Wall Street, but it's time to pull the plug on this if it isn't already too late.Because of the threat to national security, lawmakers must ban frontier AI companies, new data centers, and further AI development.
