Liberals sweep 3 federal byelections, CBC News projects

Braeden Caley will be the new MP for the riding of North Vancouver-Capilano after a byelection win on Monday, the CBC decision desk is projecting.

The contest was one of three federal byelections on Monday, with others in Ontario and Quebec also won by the Liberals, CBC News projects.

Caley had previously worked with Prime Minister Mark Carney in the Prime Minister's Office and was one of six candidates in the race.

The seat became vacant in June when then-Liberal MP Jonathan Wilkinson resigned to take a job as Canada's ambassador to the European Union.

Wilkinson had held the seat since 2015, and had captured it easily in last year's federal election with 60 per cent of the vote.

The Conservatives last won the riding in 2011, when Stephen Harper secured his majority government.

The Tories' Stephen Curran, NDP's Stephen Tweedale, Greens' Shelley Luce, People's Party's Ehsan Arjmand and Independent Jeff Monds were the other names on the ballot.

What's at stake in the North Vancouver federal byelection?

The wins mean the Liberals have secured a legislative majority in the House of Commons as six other byelections are expected in the coming months.

The House is scheduled to return for its fall sitting on Sept. 21.
