Local martial artist shines on world stage

Local martial artist Carter St Jean recently competed at two world title events representing Canada this past August in Croatia, at the 2026 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu World Cup and the 2026 No-Gi World Championships.

On Aug. 21 St. Jean placed fourth in his division at the Gi World Cup where he faced competitors from both Austria and Croatia. On Aug. 22 he placed 5th at the No-Gi World Championships, where he faced competitors from both Romania and the Ukraine.

St. Jean qualified for both these tournaments by winning gold at both the Gi and No-Gi Canadian National Championships for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

St. Jean’s team says he worked hard, eager to perform better on the world stage this year, entering in a weight category 65lbs lighter than his previous year. They say he genuinely enjoys representing his country and strives to continue to pursue his dream of winning gold at the highest level of competition.

He was sponsored for a second time by Agnico Eagle Mine, Macassa site. The $10 thousand sponsorship covered most of the costs associated with preparing the events, as well as the events themselves (including costs of travel, accommodation, meals, etc). Travel included multiple trips to Toronto to train with Team Canada. His father, Benny St Jean of Agnico Eagle Mines, travelled with him and supported him in Croatia. He extends a thank you to his parents for their continued support.

He would also like to express his sincere appreciation and gratitude to the mine for the support as well as an extended thank you to the following individuals;

His coaches Matthew Poulin, owner of Total Martial Arts Centre in Timmins and Ghislain Aube, Timmins. His team Canada coaches, Andrew Buckley and Kieran Kichuk. Dr. Derrick Beleutz and Malorie York of Before Movement Chiropractic in Kirkland Lake and Renate Belanger, his personal fitness trainer.
