Man catches training grenade while fishing in Selkirk, Man.

A man returned from Selkirk's waterfront with a particularly unbelievable fish story Thursday.

Manitoba RCMP say a man was fishing in the Red River at about 3 p.m. Thursday when he reeled in what appeared to be a hand grenade with no safety pin attached.

The RCMP's explosive disposal unit went to the city, which is about 34 kilometres north of Winnipeg, and contacted members of the Canadian Armed Forces, police said in a news release Friday. Members of 17 Wing's explosive disposal team eventually determined the item was a 1950s training grenade.

Police said the item was deemed safe to be taken to a facility for disposal.

RCMP advised anyone who finds an object that appears to be an explosive device to not disturb it, and to go to a safe location and contact police.
