Man charged with 2nd-degree murder in shooting of security guard at Pickering casino

Accused arrested in Saskatchewan earlier this month, now in custody of Durham police

A man has been charged after a Pickering casino security guard was shot dead in 2023, Durham police said.

A 20-year-old man is facing a second-degree murder charge in connection with the killing of Michael Ferdinand, who was shot while on the job at Pickering Casino Resort.

Police found Ferdinand with gunshot wounds just after 5 a.m. on Oct. 9, 2023. He was taken to the hospital where he later died.

In 2023, police identified a 17-year-old male as the suspect and obtained a Canada-wide warrant for his arrest. His name and photo were released in November and December that year, but were since taken down because he was a minor when the shooting happened.

The accused was arrested earlier this month. He was found in Saskatoon following "an extensive investigation" involving multiple jurisdictions and was taken into Durham police custody on Wednesday, police said in a news release Friday.

The man was said to be of no fixed address but is thought to have ties to Toronto's Jane and Finch area.
