Man drowns after jumping off cliff southeast of Calgary

RCMP say a man drowned on Saturday afternoon after jumping off a cliff southeast of Calgary.

Police say the 35-year-old man jumped into the Highwood River at about 12:23 p.m. at the Nature's Hideaway campground, located about 30 kilometres southeast of Calgary in Foothills County.

Okotoks RCMP, Foothills Fire and Emergency Services and a Calgary Police Service Helicopter Air Watch for Community Safety (HAWCS) helicopter responded to the scene.

The man was found in the water but declared deceased.

Police say he was a resident of Mexico and had been visiting family.

"Okotoks RCMP is strongly urging the public to avoid cliff jumping due to serious risks, including underwater rock hazards not visible to the surface and strong currents," a police statement reads.

Nature's Hideaway has long been a popular location for swimming and cliff jumping.

CBC News has reached out to the campground for comment.
