Man in critical condition, teenage girl injured in Mooney's Bay stabbing

Paramedics say they received reports that hundreds of kids were partying in the area

A young man received critical injuries in a stabbing at Mooney’s Bay Park on Saturday evening that also injured a teenage girl, police say.

Ottawa paramedics received reports that hundreds of kids were partying in the Mooney's Bay area just before 9 p.m.

Multiple stabbings were also reported in the same area, according to paramedics.

On arrival, first responders treated a young man with critical stab wounds, before rushing him to a trauma centre.

A teenage girl was also stabbed. According to paramedics, she was taken to hospital in stable condition.

Yellow tape and police cruisers cordoned off large portions of Mooney’s Bay Park on Sunday as officers investigated what happened the night before.

"An argument escalated towards an altercation involving knives," Ottawa police Insp. Jamie Harper said.

According to Harper, the victims and suspects knew each other and the stabbing was a "targeted event" that quickly intensified.

The man who was stabbed has stabilized in the hospital, but his injuries remain critical.

"The [victim] has improved in their condition but continues to fight for their life," Harper said.

'At the infancy of the investigation'

Residents and beachgoers can expect police presence to continue at Mooney’s Bay Park as police say the investigation is just beginning.

"It's gonna take several hours," Harper said.

"They're searching every square inch of this area very diligently."

Police have obtained video surveillance footage of the stabbing and identified areas of interest around the park.

"My recommendation is that the individuals [involved] should get a lawyer and maybe turn themselves in because it's only a matter of time," Harper said.
