Manitoba traffic stop leads to nearly $1M cash seizure

Speeding stop led to investigation, cash found in bags, police say

Two men from Ontario are facing charges after Manitoba RCMP seized nearly $1 million in cash from a vehicle pulled over for speeding on the Trans-Canada Highway near Brandon.

Just before 9 p.m. on July 31, an officer clocked an eastbound vehicle travelling 129 km/h in a 100 km/h zone along Highway 1 and pulled it over, RCMP said in a Friday news release.

That led to a search of the vehicle, police said, and "multiple bags" of Canadian cash were found, amounting to an estimated $970,000.

The two men in the vehicle — a 22-year-old from Toronto and a 44-year-old from Stouffville, Ont. — were arrested and face charges of possession of property obtained by crime for the purpose of trafficking over $5,000.

The 44-year-old was released on an order, while the 22-year-old remains in custody in Brandon, RCMP said.

Police did not say where they believe the money came from. Their investigation continues.
