Media veteran Shashi Sinha to retire from Omnicom

Shashi Sinha is set to retire and is stepping down from his role at the merged Omnicom-IPG entity, bringing the curtain down on one of the most influential careers in India's media agency business.

Sinha, who has been instrumental in shaping IPG's media operations in India, is understood to be planning the next chapter of his professional journey around mentoring startups. He intends to work closely with founders and emerging businesses, leveraging more than three decades of experience in advertising, media strategy and business leadership.

At IPG India, Sinha oversaw the group's three media agency brands—Lodestar, Initiative and BPN—and has played a pivotal role in building their market presence and client relationships over the years.

An alumnus of IIT Kanpur and IIM Bangalore, Sinha began his career at Parle as a product manager before pioneering what would become a defining shift in India's media industry. In the early 1990s, he founded Lodestar, widely recognised as the country's first dedicated media planning and buying agency, helping separate media from creative services at a time when the agency business was still largely integrated.

He also established one of India's earliest media research and planning tools divisions, laying the foundation for data-driven media planning long before audience analytics became central to marketing decisions.

Beyond his responsibilities at IPG, Sinha has remained deeply involved in shaping industry infrastructure. He served as Chairman of the Technical Committee at the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC), where he has been closely associated with the evolution of India's television audience measurement systems and industry standards.

His retirement comes at a time of significant change for the global advertising industry. IPG is in the process of combining with Omnicom, after a deal that created the world's largest advertising holding company, while media agencies are simultaneously navigating rapid shifts driven by artificial intelligence, retail media and changing consumer behaviour.
