‘Mirzapur: The Movie’ creates ‘bhaukaal’ at box office, nears ₹100 crore in India

Mirzapur: The Movie has opened strongly at the box office, giving one of India’s most popular OTT franchises a promising start on the big screen. The film has collected ₹93.75 crore net in India and ₹132.35 crore worldwide in its first three days, according to trade figures reported by Moneycontrol.

Directed by Gurmmeet Singh, the film hit theatres on September 4, bringing back Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal and Divyenndu as Kaleen Bhaiya, Guddu Pandit and Munna Tripathi.

The film opened with ₹25.75 crore on Friday and followed it with ₹32 crore on Saturday. Sunday proved stronger, with collections rising to ₹36 crore, a 12.5% jump from Saturday. That took its three-day India net to ₹93.75 crore. Sacnilk reported 60.6% occupancy across 11,344 shows on Sunday.

₹140 crore worldwide is now within reach

The overseas market added around ₹7 crore on Day 3, taking the film's overseas gross to approximately ₹20 crore. Its worldwide gross consequently reached ₹132.35 crore in three days.

The domestic gross has reached ₹112.35 crore, while the net collection is ₹93.75 crore. That leaves the film just over ₹6 crore short of the ₹100-crore India mark.

The franchise is doing the heavy lifting

What makes the opening notable is that Mirzapur: The Movie is not being sold on the traditional Bollywood-star model. Its biggest draw is the franchise itself and the audience that has followed it through three seasons on Prime Video.

The film brings back its familiar characters and adds new faces including Ravi Kishan and Jitendra Kumar. The established cast includes Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Divyenndu, Rasika Dugal, Shweta Tripathi, Abhishek Banerjee and others.

That makes the box office performance an interesting test of how much value a successful streaming property can carry into cinemas. Mirzapur has spent years building familiarity around its characters, and the opening weekend suggests that a sizeable part of that audience was willing to pay for the theatrical experience.

From OTT fandom to cinema footfalls

The film's performance could also have implications beyond Mirzapur. Streaming platforms and studios have increasingly looked at established digital franchises as potential theatrical properties, but an OTT following does not automatically translate into ticket sales.

In this case, the combination of familiar characters, a large existing fan base and the promise of a new chapter appears to have created enough urgency for audiences to turn up in cinemas.

The film was already generating strong interest before release, with Business Standard reporting encouraging advance bookings and noting that its theatrical performance could influence how other OTT franchises are taken to the big screen.

The opening weekend has largely settled the first question: Mirzapur can bring its streaming audience into theatres.

The film needs to maintain reasonable collections through the weekdays. A strong Monday-to-Thursday run would suggest that the audience extends beyond the most devoted fans. A steep fall, meanwhile, would indicate that much of the opening was driven by franchise excitement and pent-up demand.

For now, Mirzapur: The Movie has made a convincing start. The ₹100-crore India milestone is close, while ₹140 crore worldwide is the next immediate target.
