Mistral AI unveils new AI model aimed at 'narrowing the gap' with top Chinese competitors
The last major artificial intelligence (AI) model from Mistral AI had been released in December 2025, with its most recent update in April 2026. In an intensely competitive sector dominated by American and Chinese companies, the French start-up knew it was under pressure to deliver on performance. Mistral Large 4, its new flagship AI model unveiled on Tuesday, October 6, "narrows the gap" with the best models, said co-founder Guillaume Lample. "On aggregate rankings, [the model] is among the world's best open models," Mistral AI said in its press release, referring to the models that are freely accessible and modifiable – a segment currently led by Chinese players.
While these performances remain to be confirmed in the regularly updated rankings by independent third parties, Mistral AI also asserted that it is on a "trajectory" to further improve its models' capabilities in the coming months.
